Here we go!

In the white corner, guess who, Tomin “Myaka” Vladimir.
In the black corner, again, mr. Xavier “Oligoelement” Bourdil
This is remach, and a good one!

Idea

Call me stupid, but I don’t getting it.
I have but 1 association: jewelry.
If it was what you aiming for, well,
mission accomplished!

Visuals

Technically, this is relatively simple
3d work, but I really like what I see.
Sharp “gold” shapes are working great
with sharp cone objects, spheres are
doing great geometrical contrast with
sharp objects in the scene.
Black cones are making perfect contrast with
white background and “gold” typo.
Central object is clearly visible.
Feel of movement is great.
I also like play of scales of objects and thanks
to that + thanks to reflections -> very nice detail.
What I don’t like is color of “gold”. You could make
it darker, with more gradient work.
I’d also worked more on borders of main typo,
to make it less perfect, less 3d.

Overall

Eye-catching, stylish, designish work, original enough, perfect contrast
and nice detail. But. Message is not that clear and
central object could use more natural look.
Great work anyway!

Good evening everyone!
In the white corner, your favorite looser, Tomin “Myaka” Vladimir.
In the black corner, mr. Xavier “Oligoelement” Bourdil
Take a good look at Xavier, this isn’t last time his work featured here!

Idea

Can’t see any, sorry.
Hey, wait, this is an abstract work!

Emotions

I feel desperate, cold, loneliness
and an echo of game (not like computer game,
more like playing with feelings)
in this one. I like how you underlined/completed
her emotions with your design/art work.

Visuals

I like surreal feel in it, I really like subtle
contrast here, I like how you determined space
with geometry.
I don’t like horizon line, placement of floating
object is good but not perfect.
Main problem is her face. You’re trying new technique
here, and it is something interesting indeed, but
the way it is now, it is waaaay to messy and random.
Plus those sharp edges of some pieces on her chin
looking like a bug. So central object is very well
detailed, catches attention, but could use a lot more
work.

Overall

Nice emotional part, interesting new technique, but
lack of idea and strong unfinished feeling.

6.7 of 10 (+1 for emotional deepness, but this is IMO)

Round 4: Myaka VS Mako Miyamoto

January 26, 2010

WOW, a hard one indeed!
In the white corner, the one and yet only, Tomin “Myaka” Vladimir.
In the black corner, mr. Mako Miyamoto

Idea.
Main idea is a bit too straight-forward,
not very smart or original, no “expect unexpected”
moment here.

Visual language.
Amazing line work, face is 100% recognizable,
strange but working very well composition and
VERY strange colors. What I’m trying to say?
For a piece of art this selection of color is
interesting, eye-catching for sure. BUT, I will
never put this picture on a wall in my house,
I’m too scared for my mental health.
I also don’t like floor very much, both texture work
and line work.

Mood.
This is what make this one unique. Not only
strange colors, perfect line work, but mood.
This picture is alive, main character is looking
at you, you can feel it, you believe he is alive
from first sight.

Overall.
Great artwork with real soul in it but with some
minor conceptual/coloring flows.

Round 3: Myaka VS Tobias Wildi and Sidney Widmer

January 21, 2010

Welcome to our third fight, and second motion graphics fight.
In the white corner,
motion-consuming machine,Tomin “Myaka” Vladimir.
In the black corner, mr.Tobias Wildi and mr. Sidney Widmer

2 on 1 fight? How is that fair? We’ll see!

FIGHT!

Technique.

Some of you might say:
”Noooo! Another one stop-motion!”
And you will be right. In terms of technique,
there is nothing new in this shot, seen it before,
will see it again.

Story.

As stand-alone story there is nothing really special,
just another good display of some of Buddhist views,
a karma concept illustrated. Nothing more.
And sadly there is no GRAND FINALE.
Anyway cycled structure kinda explains it.

Visuals.

I could say “this film could use some post-work” but I won’t,
because there is no need in any additional post-work.
All FXs are created thanks to stop-motion, and it is a good thing,
coloring is not very cinematic, it is more like documental. But it
is a good thing too.
What I visually don’t like is title work. You should use either simpler
font or more sophisticated one but in second case you need to make
it perfect. This version you have is stuck somewhere in between.

Editing.

This film WAAAY too long. But it kinda works ok if you have some time
to spare and ready for a long walk. It also works fine with music,
great atmosphere.

Direction.

To make everything clear you need to watch it paying great
deal of attention. And it is a bit difficult to stay focused for
such a long period of time. Direction is not that bad but
sometimes its really hard to catch up story from one cut
to another.

Overall.

Here comes BIG surprise! I really ENJOYED this film.
Not very interesting story? Ha! At least there IS A STORY,
most of nowdays motion work doesn’t have any at all.
And you know what? SOMEHOW this overused stop-motion
technique+not very cool but fine story +
strange slow-yet-hard-to-follow storytelling +
a bit nice of humor + really nice atmosphere thanks
to very good soundtrack = JOY!

So please, respect inhuman amount of work
putted in this one, take your time, be patient,
and watch it front->end.
I bet you will like it.

Round 2: Myaka VS Andrew Morev

January 20, 2010

Welcome to another exciting fight! Motion graphics fight.
In the white corner, addicted to motion, Tomin “Myaka” Vladimir.
In the black corner, mr. Andrew Morev.

FIGHT!

Idea & Direction:

I like basic idea of semi-scientific experiments with noise.
But whole direction of a shot suffers from general flows.
I can see 2 major problems here:

1. No evolution. It is understandable that structure of clip
is noisy, it is part of concept. But degree of coolness is not
growing during clip, and this is just wrong. You gave up
everything you have to offer to a viewer in first 5 seconds.

2. Ending. It was rather unexpected. Feels like you cropped
action in the middle.
My emotions during the shot:
Ok, color bars, I guess this is intro. Good dynamics from very
beginning.
WOW! What was that? Colorful geometry. Very cool looking.
Another one. No, same, nice, niiice, wonder what next.
What the… why? This is the end? Already? Noooo!

Execution:

I LOVE color work, typography is totally unreadable but nice looking,
A bit trendy, but works fine with shot, animation is very interesting,
totally fits in concept, editing is just great and music works very well.

Overall:

It is really hard to apply regular rules to experimental stuff, yet
I’ll try. Original idea, not a jaw-dropping but still very good execution,
and poor direction. Ha, I enjoyed it a lot anyway!

7 of 10. Full screen playback is highly recommended.

Round 1: Myaka VS Doodlewhale

January 20, 2010

Good evening everyone! Here comes our first fight ever!
In the white corner
not as legendary yet well known: Tomin “Myaka” Vladimir.
In the black corner, mr. Stuart “doodlewhale” Rutherford.

FIGHT!

Visual language:
This type of pictures I’m calling “Creative photo-manipulations”, it doesn’t hold any artistic value in it, but it tells us a story, or displays an everyday situation from unexpected point of view.

Idea:
I really can’t say this is something original, done before million times,
but what makes it special is great atmosphere! Snowy park, so calm, so unprepared. And harbinger of the apocalypse on BG. Awesome!

Execution:
Quality of base stock (a park) is very low, but it is part of main idea – cellphone shot of unbelievable event. Cloverfieldish effect of some sort.
Composition is a bit strange but let’s say a camera guy was too scared
to think of it at moment of shot.
Walker itself blended perfectly, great integration in atmosphere.
I just love how author managed to add sense of distance to main object.
But this “aura” around streetlamp is kinda ruining whole semi-photo-realistic thing.

Overall:
Not very creative or original, execution isn’t perfect either (but good), but guys, STAR WARS and atmosphere actually did the trick.
